Update from Beit Atfal Assomoud

Day 17…

Heavy fighting is still taking place mainly in the south, while air raids are targeting every single village in this burning area plus targets in Bekaa. The death toll given by the ministry of health reached 600 one third of them are children while an estimated number of 88-100 bodies are still under the debris of destroyed houses that cannot be reached. The influx of people trying to reach safe areas is still flowing, and the UNIFIL was able yesterday to evacuate 250 people mainly women and children. The Christian villages in the south are receiving many families and the number of inhabitants there tripled while the remaining food supplies diminished a lot. Drinking water is a major problem and people started drinking from a polluted pool used by the farmers to wash their tobacco crop. It is still very difficult for the convoys carrying supplies to reach out those stranded people. However, although the Israelis claim that they are giving the people definite periods to evacuate their villages, they keep bombarding the roads leading to safety.
600 schools are being used to accommodate the displaced in addition to a substantial number living with relatives or friends.
Although two planes landed yesterday in Beirut airport carrying medical supplies from Egypt and Jordan, the air post still shut down. As for the safe corridors that are supposed to be used to carry humanitarian aid it is still a mirage as the director of Medcins San Frontier of  Belgium said. WHO spokeswoman in  Geneva said "There are a lot of people living in confined areas that can lead to diseases".
The Palestinian camps are hosting a number of 2000 families including an estimated number of 8-10 thousand people only in the Southern camps. The major number being in Ein el-Helweh camp in Saida,, while in the North Naher el-Bared and Beddawi camps received 520 families and as I'm writing this report another 30 families arrived in Beddawi. The Palestinian refugees are sharing their rooms, schools, mosques and supplies with the Lebanese families; this is leading to shortage of mattresses, water and medical supplies. "We were already sharing among ourselves half a potato, and then when the new refugees came in we had to cut it again, we barely have any potato left, people with nothing are helping people with nothing, that is the irony of the war…" said a man from Al-Buss camp "We are now one nation united in our pain and plight," said another.
Some families from  Beirut camps are also leaving towards the North although Beirut camps were not hit during the fight, but people who had previous tragic experiences are in a state of panic.
As far as our staff is concerned, working with other NGOs, they are still working in small groups filling special applications with certain information about each family that will facilitate the distribution of needed supplies. A group of youth stated campaigns to clean the garbage that accumulated inside the camps, other groups are making ready the shelters inside the camps in case of any emergency. The shelters need to cleaned and supplied with ventilation, water, lights and necessary fire extinguisher equipment. First aid training was given to a number of youth to enable them to face any potential attacks against the camps.
With the fire of war still blazing, it is anticipated that the fighting will take longer time to stop; new wounds are being opened in the body of tired country before the old ones are healed. Who said that war can carry any logic???
Only your solidarity our friends is the only logic left among this insanity.

Message from Abu Wassim

Dear Friends

By observing what is actually and daily happening, and following the events of daily violation such as navy, air and terrestrial violation it’s confirmed that Israleian entity does not respect the international laws and rules neither in South Lebanon nor in Palestine.
He who follows what is happening in Palestine is able to recognize the extent of suffering of the Palestinian people for more than half a century. It’s the suffering of the whole world, the whole humanity and the whole free people all over the world, before being the suffering of Arab and Muslims.
It’s the exceptional and unique state, of the whole world, of people who are outside their country. Today, he who follows the international society recognizes that the only unapplicable decisions are that which orders Israeli to respect them, but in fact Israeli does not  respect these decisions nor the Palestinian people who emigrate in 1948 and still having the keys of the homes until now, hopping of return by the United Nation’s decision no 194 All the countries that break down these decisions are responsible for the daily massacres that are done to the Palestinian people. And consequently help the Palestinian people, the Arab and Islamic people not to respect the international legalization, which did not act justly with the justice issues.

Update from Beit Atfal Assomoud

Day 16….

Heavy bombardment is targeting every single village in the south and the city of Tyre from the air and sea…
In order to paralyze and create more chaos and suffering in the supposedly safe areas, trucks are being increasingly a target…3 trucks carrying vegetables were hit yesterday in the mountain town of Dhour Choueir the only operating road from this area towards Beirut, another three trucks carrying medical aid were hit in Bekaa while trying to reach Beirut and one driver was killed. "Israel has so far targeted more than 450 trucks both those on the roads or parked" the head of the truck drivers syndicate said.
"Targets range from pickups transporting 300Kilograms of materials to big trucks carrying 40 tons of supplies..."
The government is negotiating to enable UNRWA and CARITAS vehicles carry aid supplies to devastated areas mainly to the people trapped in the Southern camps and Southern Christian villages where many families took refuge, but now are suffering from lack of food, medication and drinking water…Although Beirut airport received some planes, but it is not confirmed till now that the safe corridors are open with guaranteed safety….

55 UK MPs Letter in the Guardian

Time for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon

The Guardian - 26th July 2006

As MPs, we condemn both the Hizbullah rocket attacks which had killed 17
civilians in Israel by July 25 and the disproportionate Israeli military
strikes which in the last few weeks have killed over 370 civilians and
displaced at least 500,000 in Lebanon, and killed over 100 in Gaza.

Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian Authority all have the right to
defend their lawful territories and to protect their peoples from
attack. Rocket attacks by militias on Israeli towns do not protect the
people of Palestine or Lebanon. Likewise the people of Israel are not
protected by military might which targets homes, bridges and roads in
Lebanon, cuts electricity and water supplies to the majority of homes in
Gaza, including refugee camps, and which has done far more damage to
Lebanon's democratically elected government than it has to Hizbullah.
Such actions are unacceptable, immoral and illegal.

As a high contracting party to the fourth Geneva convention, the UK
government has a particular responsibility to uphold and ensure
universal respect for international humanitarian law. We also call on
the entire international community to press for an immediate ceasefire
by all parties; to help secure the release of prisoners held unlawfully,
whether by Israel, Hizbullah or by Palestinian militias; and to take
even-handed steps to secure the implementation all UN security council
resolutions concerning the Middle East, including the realisation of a
viable Palestinian state alongside an Israel secure in its lawful
borders.

Update from Beit Atfal Assomoud

Dear friends,

Day 14….it brought no changes and everybody is still waiting for a glimpse of hope. The  US human emotions are with the people of Lebanon, so they will send food for them and weapons to Israel….
The disaster on the social level will escalate to a very high level, due to the increasing numbers of displaced families who need every kind of aid and care. Even when a seize fire is imposed the social and economical problems will intensify for many years ahead.
Concerning the camps in the South many families defied the dangerous situation and took the risk to flee from the hell around them. From Rashidieyeh and Burj el-Shemali people are moving to Ein el-Helweh which hosted the people inside the UNRWA schools and others took refugees with relatives and friends. However the need for food and medication is increasing daily while the means to out reach those people is limited and dangerous. UNRWA which is supposed to be the main distributor is hardly being able to move around. Yesterday a French ship tried to reach the UN troops in Nakoura but was ordered by the Israelis to leave immediately. From another side one of the UN posts was hit by the Israelis being over all international regulations and law,  4 soldiers were killed and supposedly an investigation will be held to verify about the cause of such friendly fires….
Our centers are still working on the survey concerning the displaced families who reached as far as Naher el-Bared camp in the North, which is a very difficult job since the number keep changing as people move from one place to another. Hopefully we might be able within few days to start distributing the underwear and training suits and maybe some other material depending on the rising needs.
For those who want to know more about Rashieyeh, many families left after the attack, most of our staff are still there, quantities of food is decreasing and no way to send aid. Mariam reached Saida safely, she managed to secure to kidney dialysis sessions for her mother and is trying to secure a third one as her condition is still in need.
This is all for today as the power will be cut any minute…we will keep in touch and as long as your solidarity continuous we will not loose hope.

UNICEF Update

According to UNICEF on 18 July, "the humanitarian situation in Lebanon is rapidly deteriorating following the outbreak of armed hostilities in the country. Already, the conflict is estimated to have killed over 200 civilians and wounded more than 400 – approximately 30% of whom are children. It has destroyed significant portions of the country's infrastructure, including airports, roads, power plants, bridges, and fuel stations, disrupting the delivery of vital social services. 400,000 people are believed to have fled their homes. Most of them have sought refuge with families and friends living in safer areas, but up to 40,000 are believed to have taken shelter in unused school buildings. 70 schools have been occupied at the time of this report. These figures are likely to increase in the coming days and weeks.  The country is increasingly being put in a state of complete isolation, with access being denied through air, sea and land – except for a few by-pass roads towards Syria. Military activity has cut off territories and villages in the south, making access between them or to other parts of the country impossible."

A Call upon the International and Regional Communities

Say  STOP to Israeli War on Lebanon

Sunday- 16.7.2006
The Arab NGO Network for Development

Lebanon has been under a war attack by Israel for the fifth day since Wednesday the 12th of July 2006. The situation has been deteriorating and the military attacks have been escalating.

Israeli aggression against Lebanon went far beyond a reaction to a military operation targeting its soldiers. The capture of Israeli soldiers is serving as a mere pretext for a major offensive attack by Israel on the aspirations and the morale of the Lebanese people, as is the case with the Palestinian people through the continuous attacks on Gaza. Israeli army is targeting Lebanese civilians and civil infrastructure. The Israeli aggression against Lebanon can be described as a collective punishment against all the Lebanese people. More than 100 victims and thousands of injured inhabitants is the result of the first four days of the attack. In addition to human losses, three airports were targeted and all the coastal ports and transport and communications infrastructure including wheat elevators, bridges, and power stations have been bombed and rendered unusable.
